Sromowce Niżne

Dunajec River Rafting on a traditional raft – it is an amazing meeting with the wild nature, unchanged for thousands of years – one of the greatest tourist attractions in Europe. Simultaneously, it is the best way to see the Pieniński National Park. The Dunajec River sculpted the ravine in the limestone rocks. The ravine is known as the Dunajec River Gorge. The tradition of steering down the river on a wooden raft built from narrow boats tied together to each other dates back to the first half of the 19th century. During the rafting the raftsmen talk about the Pieniny Mountains recalling the legends about Janosik as well as pointing to the most interesting spots on the way.

The location of the Mountain Hut by the Dunajec River gorge makes it an ideal place for fisherman. No one needs reassurance that Dunajec is of the most scenic rivers in Poland. This very interesting river is also very rich in fish if one is an expert fisherman. Clean and well-hydrated water provides good conditions for fish living in the Dunajec River so many of the fish grow to impressive sizes. European chubs weighing up to 2 kilograms, asps weighing 3,5 kilograms, barbels weighing over 3,5 kilograms, nases weighing 1,5 kilograms and more, as well as 10 kilogram pikes or 5 kilogram zanders are fished here. In the waters of the Dunajec River 1-meter long huchens weighing a dozen or so kilograms were also fished.

The dominant species is the brown trout, there are a lot of graylings, the huchen is also present here (however, it can be fished  only by those who use fly-fishing) as well as European chubs, nases, roaches and, closer to the Czorsztyn Reservoir – perches, lake trouts and pikes coming to the river during the spawn season. One can also find some rainbow trouts and brook trouts which accidentally  find themselves in the Dunajec River.

General rules of fishing:

  • One should make payment to the Polish Fishing Union in Nowy Sącz District – for a year or for a period
  • Some of the places where the fee can be paid are: Krościenko village (fishing shop) or Sromowce Wyżne town – telephone: 18 26 29 660
  • Fishing is allowed with only one rod and in daytime that is from dusk to dawn (1 hour before sunrise and 1 hour after sunset)
