The Pieniny mountains |
The Pieniny mountains constitute
a part of the Pieniny’s rock belt, 550 km
long, separating the external flysch
Carpathians from the internal, so called crystal
Carpathians. The most attractive fragment of the
range, both in the respect of nature and landscape,
are the Proper Pieniny Proper. Peaks there have beautiful
and sharp shapes, and the valleys are sometimes in
the form of rock ravines. The north slopes go down
towards the valleys relatively delicately and towards
the Dunajec river they stop sharply with impressive
limestone walls facing the South or East and measuring
up to 300 m in altitude.

The
Pieniny mountains, especially their central part, are
ones of the most attractive tourist regions in
Poland. They owe their character to natural and
man-made features, access to good transportation network
and the well-organized lodging facilities and
tourist infrastructure. Their attractiveness
is also influenced by the presence of acid mineral
waters, saturated with carbon dioxide, called szczawy,
utilized in the health resorts of Szczawnica
and Krościenko. |

A
tourist attraction of European scale is
rafting down the ravine of the Dunajec. Equally
interesting are the ruins of the castle in Czorsztyn
and the gothic-renaissance castle in Niedzica,
as well as wooden churches in Grywałd, Jaworki,
Dębno Podhalańskie, churches in Biała
and Frydman.
